Washington National Cathedral
Donor RecognitionFor its first comprehensive fundraising campaign since 1990, the Washington National Cathedral launched A Cathedral for the Future, a bold effort to strengthen the Cathedral’s physical foundations and support its spiritual mission for generations to come. The donor wall was conceived as both a lasting recognition of this historic campaign and an inspiring call for future support.
The design honors the Cathedral’s timeless architecture and the community of donors who made the campaign possible. After exploring a spectrum of approaches, we arrived at a solution rooted in the Cathedral itself: names permanently etched into limestone, the same material that defines the building. This choice established both symbolic and physical permanence, ensuring that every donor is recognized in a manner that is appropriate, dignified, and enduring.
Typography played an equally important role. Within the Cathedral, the passage of time is recorded through letterforms rather than the aging of materials. To carry this forward, we selected a classic, highly legible typeface—one that feels timeless today and will remain so a century from now. The result is a donor wall that tells the story of the campaign, celebrates the breadth of generosity, and inspires future generations to contribute to the Cathedral’s ongoing legacy.

Process
Achieving the right balance of beauty and functionality required extensive sampling and on-site reviews. We tested multiple rounds of etched and paint-filled lettering to ensure the donor names were crisp and legible. We evaluated metal finishes for the campaign information plaque, donor name infill colors, and mounting details at the site within the Cathedral to confirm that every element met the design intent and harmonized with its historic setting.
